Storage : Setting Up Volumes

Setting Up Volumes
Volumes are logical partitions on your cloud storage gateway that users can access. You can create two types of volumes:
Network Attached Storage (NAS)
A NAS volume is formatted with a file system. The cloud storage gateway acts as a files server for NAS volumes, and the files on such volumes can be accessed using any of the cloud storage gateway-supported file sharing protocols.
The cloud storage gateway enables you to take snapshots of NAS volumes. For more information, see Volume Snapshots.
Storage Area Network (SAN)
A SAN volume (also called "Raw") is an unformatted volume. The cloud storage gateway cannot read files on SAN volumes, and therefore file sharing, synchronization, and cloud backup cannot be used with such volumes. In order to access a SAN volume, you must create an iSCSI target for the volume. The SAN volume will then appear as if it were a physical disk on your PC or server and can be formatted remotely.
You must create an array before creating volumes for a cloud storage gateway.
