What Files are Not Synced From the Portal?
Temporary files on the portal are not synced to the gateway. The following are not synced:
*Files which begin with ~$
*Files of type tmp or temp
*Files with type swp, dwl, or dwl2
*Files that begin with .ctera.tmp or ._
*Files named desktop.ini, Thumbs.db, .DS_Store, ._.DS_Store, CredDB.cef, .AppleDouble, .AppleSingle or .Parent
*Files which end with Zone.Identifier
Also, Windows ACL enabled folders on the portal cannot be synced unless the share is defined as Windows ACL Emulation Mode, as described in Windows File Sharing.
File Syncing Versus File Backup
File syncing is sometimes confused with file backup, but is very different. File syncing does not protect data and is not a substitute for file backup, because:
*Sync is bidirectional. For example, files deleted in the cloud are automatically deleted locally. This is not a desirable feature for backup, which should produce a stable, read-only copy of your data.
*Sync is continuous. Backup should run at scheduled intervals and preserve an accurate point-in-time snapshot of your data.
*Sync should not transfer locked files. Backup should transfer files which are locked by applications.
*Sync allows you to share file access with other users. Backup should protect your data from other users.
*Sync supports standard files and documents. Backup should support applications, such as databases, in addition to standard documents.
